Athirappilly (Thrissur): Dr. U D Shinil is highly regarded among the tribal communities of Athirapally, Thrissur, as their trusted doctor. Despite the inherent risks of the forest terrain, Shinil fearlessly ventures into these areas to locate and treat patients, providing essential medicine and compassionate care to those in need. Since 2011, he has served as a medical officer in Thrissur's Tribal Mobile Medical Unit under the National Health Mission (NHM).
Dr. Shinil embarked on this journey willingly, even at times in the absence of vehicles to escort him. His commitment quickly earned him the affection and trust of the local people, who now consider him their family doctor. Regular medical camps are held across approximately 35 tribal areas each month, ensuring educational sessions and vital immunisations for children. Through awareness programmes, he successfully addresses the locals’ reservations about modern treatments.
The tribals now affectionately refer to him as “our own doctor," acknowledging his pivotal role in positively transforming their lives and health practices.
Hailing from Amballur, Dr. Shinil has chosen to serve in remote and challenging environments, rejecting other assignments elsewhere. Alongside him are dedicated colleagues like a nursing officer, pharmacist, and driver, T T Manilal, who have been with him from the beginning.
The Tribal Mobile Medical Unit covers 32 tribal areas across 11 panchayats, including Athirappilly, ensuring healthcare reaches those who need it most.
