Kannur: A 30-year-old man was taken into custody on Saturday after allegedly killing his mother at their residence near Peravoor in Kannur district, Kerala and subsequently surrendering to local authorities, officials reported.

The victim has been identified as 53-year-old Geethamma, the wife of Thankachan and a resident of Kanichar. Police stated that her son, Christy, turned himself in at the Kelakom police station following the assault on Friday night.

Details of the Assault

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the fatal encounter occurred in a bedroom of the family home between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Christy allegedly used a knife to stab his mother in the neck.

The FIR suggests a possible motive, stating that the suspect allegedly carried out the attack after hearing local residents speaking disparagingly about the woman. Investigators noted that Christy had previously attended a college in Bengaluru but had returned to his family home before finishing his degree.

Background and Discovery

Geethamma was a prominent local figure who operated a beauty parlour and served as an active member of the BJP Mahila Morcha. The incident took place while her husband, Thankachan, was away from the residence.

Following the alleged attack, officials said Christy contacted a friend and travelled by motorcycle to the police station to notify officers of his actions. Upon receiving the information, police arrived at the home and transported Geethamma to a nearby hospital, where medical staff pronounced her dead.

Ongoing Investigation

While family members have alleged that Christy struggled with substance abuse, law enforcement officials emphasised that those claims require further verification through the investigative process.

The Kelakom police have formally registered a case of murder as they continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the death.
