Rajakkad (Idukki): The death of a woman who was found unconscious at her house in Kerala’s Idukki district has been confirmed as murder following a police investigation.

Shanthi (36), wife of Jaganmohan of Sankarapandian Mettu in Anayirankal, was found unconscious in the bedroom of her house at around 2 pm on Monday, May 7.

She was taken to a private hospital in Pooppara, where doctors declared her dead.

As Shanthi reportedly had lifestyle-related illnesses, family members did not initially suspect foul play. However, Santhanpara police grew suspicious and sent the body to Idukki Medical College for a post-mortem examination.

The post-mortem found marks on Shanthi’s neck, confirming that she had been strangled to death.

Following the investigation, Santhanpara police arrested Ramakrishnan (50), the brother-in-law of Jaganmohan. He is a resident of Estate Lane in Anayirankal.

Accused allegedly confessed during questioning

Police said Ramakrishnan had earlier informed Jaganmohan that he would visit the house. He allegedly went there when Jaganmohan was away and asked Shanthi for nails.

Shanthi informed her husband about the visit over the phone. Jaganmohan reportedly told her that the nails could be handed over after he returned home.

When Jaganmohan later reached the house, Shanthi was found lying unconscious inside. Police said Ramakrishnan initially claimed that she had collapsed while bringing him tea.

During questioning, Ramakrishnan allegedly confessed to the crime. Police said he admitted to strangling Shanthi using a bathing towel tied around her neck.

Police continue investigation into motive

The accused reportedly told police that issues related to the deceased’s character led to the murder. Police said further investigation is under way to determine the exact motive.

The arrest was made by the Santhanpara Inspector under the directions of the Idukki District Police Chief and Munnar DySP.
