New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted a widespread search operation at 15 locations across eight states in connection with a Pakistan-linked espionage case, following the arrest of a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper accused of spying for Pakistan.

According to officials, the raids took place at the premises of individuals allegedly linked with Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs). The states where the raids were carried out include Delhi, Maharashtra (specifically Mumbai), Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Assam, and West Bengal.

CRPF man allegedly leaked sensitive data for money

The development follows the arrest of Moti Ram Jat, a suspended Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of the CRPF, who was accused of sharing classified information with PIOs since 2023. In return, Jat allegedly received funds through various financial conduits within India. He has since been dismissed from service by the CRPF.

NIA had registered the case on May 20. The agency stated that the espionage operation was part of an ongoing anti-India terror conspiracy being orchestrated from across the border.

Electronic gadgets and financial records seized

During the raids, several electronic gadgets, sensitive financial documents, and other incriminating materials were seized. Officials said the confiscated items are now under detailed forensic examination for further evidence related to the espionage network.

“These are being extensively examined for clues to the espionage racket being run by Pakistan-based operatives as part of an anti-India terror conspiracy,” read a statement issued by the NIA.

Suspects had direct ties with Pakistani handlers

The NIA said that preliminary investigations revealed the suspects targeted in Saturday’s operation had direct links with Pakistani handlers and were involved in financial transactions to facilitate espionage activities.

The agency confirmed that the investigation remains active and is being conducted under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Official Secrets Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
