For teacher Salim Sikligar, giving back to society meant making learning a little easier for the students who came after him.

A teacher at a school for the visually impaired, Sikligar remembered the difficulties he faced while learning at the same school. That experience inspired him to find a simple way to make Braille easier for students to read and practise.

He modified Braille slates by increasing the size of the dots that make up the language. The larger dots are easier to feel and identify, particularly for students who are learning Braille for the first time.

The modified slates are now being used by students at the school and have been appreciated by visually impaired students and their parents.

Sikligar's idea offers a simple answer to a question many people ask: how can we give back to society? Sometimes, it can begin by making someone else's journey a little easier.
