US military strike on suspected drug-smuggling boat
A U.S. military strike on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the eastern Pacific killed three people
The U.S. military carried out another strike on Friday against a boat suspected of drug smuggling in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing three men and raising the total death toll from similar operations to more than 200.
The strike marks the third such attack announced this week as part of a months-long campaign targeting vessels allegedly involved in narcotics trafficking across the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific. In a statement, U.S. Southern Command said the vessel was engaged in drug-smuggling activities and linked to a designated terrorist organisation, though no supporting evidence was provided.
Footage released by the military showed the boat at sea before it was struck and engulfed in flames, with debris scattering across the surrounding waters. The latest attack brings the reported death toll from the campaign to 202 since operations began in September. The strikes come amid the Trump administration’s assertion that the United States is in armed conflict with Latin American drug cartels blamed for trafficking drugs into American communities.
