Thiruvananthapuram: Four people were arrested in Neyyattinkara for allegedly smuggling 125 grams of MDMA from Bengaluru in a car, police said.
The arrested have been identified as Kiran, 33, from Eanchakkal; his mother Beena, 50; Sandhya, 18, from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu; and Akshay AS Nair, 26, from Thiruvananthapuram.
Police said the accused were allegedly transporting the synthetic drug from Bengaluru when they were intercepted in Neyyattinkara.
Mobile phones belonging to all four accused were recovered during the operation, along with Rs 10,500 in cash, police said.
The latest seizure comes as authorities step up surveillance and enforcement measures ahead of the Onam season, when police agencies traditionally intensify efforts against the movement and distribution of narcotic substances.
On Monday, a joint operation by the Palakkad North Police and the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF) led to the seizure of a large quantity of narcotic substances and the arrest of three people at Olavakkode Junction.
According to the officials, the arrests were made as part of the Onam Special Drive launched to curb drug trafficking. The arrested persons have been identified as Muhammad Nisil, a native of Kottayam, and Karnataka natives Muhammad Azharudeen and his wife, B. Fathima.
The police seized nearly 1 kg of MDMA from the accused. Cocaine, brown sugar, LSD stamps and hybrid ganja were also recovered during the operation.
