UP’s Harivanshrai Bachchan Memorial library set for high-tech rebuild
The Harivanshrai Bachchan Memorial Library in Pratapgarh’s Babupatti village is set for a ₹60 lakh rebuild, with authorities approving the demolition of the dilapidated structure to make way for a modern facility.
The Harivanshrai Bachchan Memorial Library in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district will be demolished and replaced with a modern, high-tech facility, estimated to cost ₹60 lakh.
Located in Babupatti, the ancestral village of Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, the library has fallen into severe disrepair over the years due to a lack of regular maintenance.
The decision to raze the existing structure was proposed by the Gram Panchayat, following which the District Panchayat Raj Officer wrote to the Public Works Department (PWD) recommending its demolition and reconstruction.
The library was originally inaugurated in 2006 by Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan and late leader Amar Singh. However, years of neglect have left the building unsafe and unusable.
The new facility is expected to revive the library’s role as a knowledge hub while honouring the legacy of renowned poet Harivanshrai Bachchan.
