The intricate Sozni needlework, traditionally synonymous with Kashmiri shawls and stoles, is undergoing a contemporary revival as it finds expression on fashionable caps. Handcrafted with painstaking precision, these caps are steadily gaining prominence, seamlessly fusing Kashmir’s rich artisanal heritage with modern fashion sensibilities.

Spearheading this innovative shift are two young entrepreneurs from Srinagar, Owais Ahmed and Mohsin, who identified the untapped potential of adapting the age-old craft to everyday fashion accessories. What began as a personal experiment in 2019 has since evolved into a flourishing enterprise.

Offered in an array of colours, the caps showcase a spectrum of designs ranging from understated minimalism to richly detailed patterns. Floral motifs, geometric forms, and iconic Kashmiri symbols such as the chinar leaf are delicately embroidered, lending each piece a distinct cultural identity.

Artisans associated with the venture note a huge rise in demand for Sozni-embellished products over the past 15 years, reflecting a renewed appreciation for handcrafted luxury. Each cap is created with meticulous care, with more intricate designs requiring up to 15 days to complete.

Beyond commercial success, the initiative has played a vital role in sustaining livelihoods and preserving Sozni embroidery, one of Kashmir’s most treasured handicraft traditions
