A whisky brand named ‘Sangam’ has triggered sharp protests in Prayagraj, with seers, local leaders and residents alleging that the branding hurts religious sentiments linked to the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers.

A controversy has erupted in Prayagraj after a whisky brand named ‘Sangam World Malt Whisky’ was launched by a Uttar Pradesh-based distillery.
Saints, local leaders and citizens have strongly objected to the use of the word ‘Sangam’, calling it an insult to the religious and cultural identity of the holy city.
Councillor Raju Shukla said the name disrespects Sanatan Dharma and Prayagraj’s spiritual heritage.
Municipal Corporation executive member Abdul Samad warned of a protest movement if action is not taken, demanding that the sale of the liquor brand be stopped immediately.
Seer Ramanujacharya Narayanacharya Shandily Maharaj also condemned the branding, calling it a serious offence against saints and devotees.
