Contradictions, post-mortem clues, and blame game intensify mystery around Rahul Banerjee’s drowning.

The death of actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee near Talsari beach, close to Digha, is becoming increasingly complex, with multiple conflicting accounts continuing to cloud the exact sequence of events.
In the latest developments, police have questioned around 10 to 12 individuals, including members of the shooting unit, hotel staff, eyewitnesses, and residents.

Despite these efforts, investigators say there has been no clear breakthrough so far, leaving several crucial questions unanswered. The central mystery remains: How did Banerjee drown?
Conflicting versions deepen mystery
Initial police findings suggested that the actor had entered the sea on foot with co-actor Sweta Mishra during a shoot when he suddenly went under, possibly due to a sharp increase in water depth.
However, this account sharply contradicts earlier claims by some crew members, who reportedly told police that a boat had capsized during filming.
Adding to the confusion, fresh eyewitness claims suggest Banerjee may have ventured into deeper waters while attempting to rescue Mishra, before being overwhelmed by strong currents.
Further inconsistencies have raised serious questions. While the production manager claimed the actor was pulled out of the water immediately, some unit members alleged he was rescued much later.
The preliminary post-mortem findings, which indicate prolonged submersion, appear to contradict claims of an immediate rescue.
Questions have also been raised over how visuals of the incident were captured if, as claimed, the shoot had already wrapped up.
These sharply differing narratives have made it difficult for investigators to establish a definitive timeline of events.
Industry outrage, negligence allegations surface
The incident has triggered strong reactions within the film and television industry.
Several actors and technicians have alleged serious lapses in safety arrangements on set, questioning whether adequate precautions and rescue measures were in place.
The All Indian Cine Workers Association has termed the death a result of negligence rather than a mere accident, alleging that safety norms are often compromised to cut costs, putting lives at risk.
Voices from within the industry have also questioned accountability. Actor Sudipta Chakraborty pointed to the multiple versions emerging from those present, while Sreelekha Mitra raised concerns over how such an incident could occur despite a large crew on location.
Actor Rudranil Ghosh alleged attempts to shift blame onto the actor, warning against any effort to suppress the truth.
Producer Leena Gangopadhyay’s claim draws fire
Meanwhile, Leena Gangopadhyay of ‘Magic Moments’, also Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission, stated that there was no scripted requirement to enter the water and claimed Banerjee had insisted on doing so for a drone shot.
She maintained that the incident occurred in knee-deep water and that he was conscious when being taken to the hospital.
Location risks, response gaps under spotlight
Concerns have also been raised about the choice of location. Talsari’s unpredictable tides and lack of robust shooting infrastructure have come under scrutiny, with growing calls for stricter safety protocols for outdoor shoots.
An internal meeting of the Artists’ Forum was scheduled at Technicians Studio to discuss the incident, with several prominent actors expected to attend.
However, the meeting did not take place due to incomplete attendance, highlighting a fragmented industry response.
Officials maintain that no foul play has been detected so far, and the case is being treated as an accidental drowning. Notably, no formal complaint has been filed yet.
Police are currently examining video footage from the shoot location as part of the ongoing investigation.
As the probe continues, Rahul Arunoday Banerjee’s death remains shrouded in uncertainty, with conflicting accounts, missing clarity, and mounting allegations ensuring that the mystery is far from resolved.
