The `Maharani` star challenges industry norms and advocates for diverse roles for women.

As actress Huma Qureshi celebrated her birthday on 28 July, an old but powerful interview of hers is doing the rounds again and for good reason. Known for breaking stereotypes with roles in Maharani and Tarla, Huma had once spoken out about the unseen gatekeeping and age bias women face in Bollywood, especially those without industry connections.
In a brutally honest conversation with India Today, Huma had said, "There has always been a kind of gatekeeping, and it doesn’t come from one particular person or agency. I think it's a very collective form of gatekeeping." For many fans revisiting the clip on social media, her words feel just as relevant if not more, in today’s ongoing dialogue about representation and fairness in Indian cinema.
Why are women expected to look younger than we are?
After earning widespread praise for her mature, nuanced performances, Huma recounted how one casting director questioned her choice to take on older roles. “You are such a beautiful woman. Why are you ageing yourself by playing these characters? There are so many other makers who want to work with you. Try to do younger parts.”
Huma clapback, unapologetic and on point, “Why does the burden of playing younger parts always fall on girls? Why are we expected to try and look younger than we are? I’ve done my fair share of singing and dancing around trees.” She added, "If a great script comes my way, should I say no to it just because I’m afraid of portraying someone a few years older than me?"
Despite her critical acclaim, Huma admitted that the struggle for meaningful roles and access to influential rooms in the industry continues. “There are so many roles I could play, but those people don’t call me,” she said. “So what do I do? Sit at home and cry?"
She also highlighted how actresses are often forced to choose between surgery and stagnation, or carving a space for themselves by working with filmmakers who value storytelling over superficiality.
As fans and fellow actors poured in birthday wishes for Huma Qureshi yesterday, many also shared this resurfaced interview as a reminder of her boldness, clarity, and refusal to conform.
