The director described Mamitha Baiju’s role in the film as the driving force behind the protagonist’s journey.

With only days to go before its global theatrical release on 30 April, director Vignesh Raja has shared intriguing new details about his upcoming crime thriller, Kara. Starring Dhanush in the lead, the film is already generating massive buzz.
From Vellore to Ramanathapuram
Raja revealed that the script was originally conceived with a Vellore backdrop. However, to better serve the narrative’s atmosphere, he relocated the story to Ramanathapuram.
To maintain linguistic authenticity, the production opted for a "down south" dialect. Raja explained that since the slangs of Ramanathapuram and Madurai share close similarities, the film employs a generalised southern vernacular to ground the characters in their new environment.

Directing the "Dhanush Magic"
Moving away from his standard practice of rigid storyboarding, Raja adopted a more fluid, organic approach to capture the film’s emotional core. He credited the leading man’s dual experience as an actor and director for enhancing the production:
"When you let Dhanush perform freely, he brings unexpected magic to the screen. Being a director himself, he contributed several ideas and encouraged me to use what suited the film best."
A powerful ensemble: Mamitha and Suraj
The director also highlighted the pivotal roles played by the supporting cast:
-
Mamitha Baiju: Described as the "driving force" behind the protagonist’s journey.
-
Suraj Venjaramoodu: Raja admitted that casting the role was a challenge, as several actors initially felt the part lacked depth. After a significant rewrite to "enhance the character’s weight," the National Award-winning Suraj Venjaramoodu immediately signed on.
Action without excess
While Kara is billed as an unpredictable thriller, Raja was keen to clarify that it avoids gratuitous violence. The action remains tethered to the requirements of the script, ensuring the focus stays on the "gripping" nature of the mystery.
Produced by Vels Film International, the film has successfully cleared censor formalities. Alongside Dhanush and Mamitha, the thriller features a stellar line-up including Jayaram, K. S. Ravikumar, and Karunas, making it one of the most anticipated Tamil releases of the year. (IANS)
