Veteran Tamil film producer K Rajan, known for his fiery speeches, blunt opinions on the film industry and decades-long presence in Tamil cinema, died by suicide in Chennai on Sunday at the age of 85.

According to reports, Rajan allegedly jumped into the Adyar river, following which fire and rescue personnel recovered his body and shifted it to a hospital. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident, while news of his sudden death has left members of the Tamil film industry shocked and grieving.

K Rajan was widely recognised in Tamil cinema for openly speaking about issues affecting producers and the wider film industry during public events, interviews and online discussions. His speeches often generated debate because of his direct criticism of industry practices, including the growing financial burden on producers and the increasing remuneration of actors.

Career in Tamil cinema began in the 1980s

Rajan entered the Tamil film industry as a producer in the early 1980s.

He made his debut as a producer with the Brammacharigal starring Suresh in 1983. Through his production banner Ganesh Cine Arts, he later backed several films and also moved into direction.

Among the films he directed was Unarchigal, featuring actors Abbas and Kunal.

Held leadership role in film distribution sector

Apart from film production and direction, K Rajan also held an important administrative role in the industry.

In 2000, he served as president of the Chennai Film Distributors Association and remained actively involved in discussions related to the business side of Tamil cinema.

His son, Prabhukanth, later entered the Tamil film industry as an actor.

The news of Rajan’s death has triggered an outpouring of condolences from members of the Tamil film fraternity.

Many from the industry have remembered him as a fearless voice who regularly highlighted the struggles faced by producers and smaller players in Tamil cinema.
