Veteran playwright and theatre director V. Sasi has passed away at the age of 75. A prominent figure in Kasaragod’s theatre scene, he directed several acclaimed plays including ‘Marameedan’ and ‘Maatti Vecha Thalakal’.

Renowned playwright and theatre director V. Sasi (75) has passed away. He was the writer and director of several professional and amateur theatre productions. In 2023, he received the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award and the A. Santhakumar Theatre Award. He was also honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by ACT Neeleshwaram.
‘Marameedan’ and ‘Maatti Vecha Thalakal’ were among the plays he directed that received considerable attention from audiences. A native of Padinjattam Kozhuval in Nileshwaram, V. Sasi worked within the distinctive cultural landscape of Kasaragod.
His plays brought together social issues, the lives of ordinary people and the complexities of human relationships. He was also actively involved in forming local theatre collectives and organising theatre workshops for a new generation of theatre practitioners.
‘Ekalavyan’ was the first play he directed. His other notable works include ‘Pakkanar Sooktham’, ‘Bolivia’, ‘Shwasam’, ‘Pen Vilakku’, ‘Manasantharathinte Baakipathram’, ‘Kooki Paayum Theevandi’ and ‘Hridayathilekkoru Chakram’.
