
Streaming giant Netflix unveiled the teaser of its upcoming title ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ on Saturday. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast including Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, and Kumud Mishra, among others, the Anubhav Sinha-directorial is all set for its premier, later this month, on August 29. Based on the hijack of the Indian Airlines flight IC 814 on December 24, 1999, the title will take the viewers through what happened on the hijacked flight, before it landed in Kandahar, Afghanistan. While the teaser has created a significant buzz among the fans, we take a look at other Indian films that were loosely based on the Kandahar Hijack.
'Yodha': Starring Siddharth Malhotra in the leading role, 'Yodha' is an action-thriller which was released theatrically on March 15. Co-starring Disha Patani and Raashii Khanna, the film is loosely based on the Kandahar Hijack, and is co-directed by Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha. The film underperformed at the box office, recording a gross collection of Rs 53 crore, reportedly.

'Kandahar': The 2010 Malayalam film 'Kandahar', is also based on the hijacking event. Led by Malayalam superstar Mohanlal as Major Mahadevan, the film is a third installment of director Major Ravi's Major Mahadevan series. The war film also featured Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan and Tamil star Ganesh Venkatraman. The movie was also released in Tamil and Hindi languages.
'Hijack': Titled 'Hijack', Shiney Ahuja and Esha Deol's 2008 film is also based on the Kandahar hijack incident. Directed by Kunal Shivdasani, the film also starred KK Raina, Rasika Dugal, and Mona AMbegaonkar, among others. Produced by Dinesh Vijan and Shivdasani, the movie was a disaster at the box office.
'Zameen': Filmmaker Rohit Shetty made his directorial debut with the 2003 film Zameen. Starring Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Panjak Dheer, and others, Zameen is loosely based on the hijack of IC 814. The film did average business at the box office. Said to be made on a budget of Rs 11 crore, it reportedly collected Rs. 17.8 crore at the ticket window.
