In Tamil cinema, a fascinating trend is gaining steam- reusing iconic film titles from the past for brand new movies. Whether it’s homage, superstition, or pure marketing savvy, filmmakers are borrowing legendary names like Parasakthi, Billa, Vettaikaran, Mappillai and Vikram — and audiences are loving it.
The latest example is “Parasakthi”, a 2026 Indian Tamil-language historical political action drama directed by Sudha Kongara and produced by Aakash Bhaskaran of Dawn Pictures. Starring Ravi Mohan, Sivakarthikeyan, Atharvaa and Sreeleela in her Tamil debut, this film revives the title of a 1952 cult classic that marked the debut of Sivaji Ganesan and legendary writer M. Karunanidhi.
The original Parasakthi became a milestone in Tamil cinema history for its powerful social commentary, memorable dialogues and portrayal of a family’s struggles during World War II.
But Parasakthi isn’t the only modern movie to tap into this trend. Here are a few more that have already set the trend in motion.
Vettaikaran (1964 and 2009)
Vijay’s Vettaikaran borrowed its name from MGR’s 1964 action drama. While the storyline differed, the title reuse was a deliberate homage to the matinee idol’s legacy and helped spark interest among fans of both eras.
Paayum Puli (1983 and 2015)
Vishal’s 2015 actioner reused the title of Rajinikanth’s fiery 1983 hit. While the characters and stories weren’t identical, the theme of a justice-seeking hero connected both films in spirit.
Kaaki Sattai (1985 and 2015)
Sivakarthikeyan’s version revived the title of Kamal Haasan’s iconic cop thriller. Though both movies involve undercover missions, the modern take mixed comedy and mass appeal, making it one of Sivakarthikeyan’s standout films.
Vikram (1986 and 2022)
Most recently, Kamal Haasan revived his own 1986 action-adventure title for a new film with director Lokesh Kanagaraj. The Vikram teaser has gone viral, trending at the top on YouTube and sparking excitement among fans of both the classic and the new generation.
Mappillai (1989 and 2011)
In 2011, Dhanush remade Rajinikanth’s cult classic, keeping the original title. With fresh direction and subtle story tweaks, the film became a commercial success while honoring the legend.
Ponniyin Selvan (2005 and 2022)
The epic novel adaptation by Mani Ratnam adopted the same title as a smaller 2005 family drama directed by Radha Mohan, starring Ravi Krishna, Gopika and Revathi, but this time on a grand historical canvas, proving that a title can be reimagined for completely different narratives.
Billa (2007 and 1980)
This star-studded remake brought back the legendary title from Rajinikanth’s blockbuster. Starring Ajith Kumar and Vishnu Varadhan, the stylish action thriller became a massive hit, with Ajith’s performance winning praise even from the original superstar himself.
Why this trend works in Tamil cinema
Film titles in Kollywood are more than names, they’re brands, legacies, and symbols of cinematic history. Reusing a timeless title: taps into nostalgia, bridges generations of moviegoers, boosts early search interest and social media buzz sets a tone before the first frame rolls.
Plus, with streaming and global fandom on the rise, a familiar title can instantly broaden a movie’s reach.
Whether it’s superstition, homage, or strategic branding, Tamil cinema’s fascination with legendary titles has become one of its most talked-about trends.
