Shreya Ghoshal is one of the leading female playback singers in the industry. She has numerous hit songs in her kitty, including, ‘Dola Re Dola,’ ‘Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai,’ ‘Bahara,’ ‘Teri Ore,’ and many more. However, she also has sung some peppy numbers like ‘Chikni Chameli’ and ‘Param Sundari’.
While her fans love the varied range of songs she has sung and continues to do so, there are songs like ‘Chikni Chameli’ that Shreya is “embarrassed” about.
In a candid conversation with popular YouTube personality Lilly Singh, the renowned playback singer made a startling admission - she's embarrassed to have sung certain songs, including the famous 'Chikni Chameli' from the 2011 film Agneepath.
"I have a handful of songs that could be borderline raunchy, like Chikni Chameli. There is a very fine line between being sexual and sexy or being out there just making yourself objectified. Why I am a little conscious about this now over time is because I see young little girls singing this song,” said Shreya.
This isn't the first time Ghoshal has expressed her discomfort with the song; a few years ago, during the auditions of a reality TV singing show for children, a young girl's rendition of 'Chikni Chameli' had left the singer visibly displeased. During the auditions, the child sang ‘Aa Re Pritam Pyaare’. Shreya’s co-judge, singer-composer Vishal Dadlani, asked the girl to sing another song, after which she sang ‘Chikni Chameli.’ Her audition was stopped mid-way, and the girl was asked to call her mother. Reacting to her audition, Shreya was heard saying on the camera, “OMG! What songs is she singing?”
Now, in her recent interview, Ghoshal has reiterated her reservations about singing such songs. HS explained that children aren’t aware of the song’s meaning but dance to it. “And then, I feel very embarrassed. A little girl who is hardly 5-6 years old, is singing this and it doesn’t suit or sound good. I don’t want that, so I have been conscious about that,” Shreya explained in the interview.
