A case has been registered against Kumaresan (29) and Praveen Kumar (31), accused of copying Rajinikanth's latest release 'Vettaiyan'. The Kochi Cyber Police initiated the case, which will soon be transferred to Bengaluru Police for further investigation. A pirated version of Rajinikanth's latest blockbuster 'Vettaiyan' had surfaced online, just hours after its theatrical release.
The culprits were apprehended as they left a theatre after illegally recording 'Vettaiyan'. The individuals involved, who hold IT degrees, were found to be earning a monthly salary of Rs 44,000 and received additional incentives based on the films they managed to pirate.
Earlier, the two Tamil Nadu natives were arrested for pirating and distributing Tovino Thomas' film 'Ajayante Randam Moshanam' (ARM). The duo was caught in Bengaluru, having copied the movie on their mobile phones and distributed it through Telegram. The authorities discovered that the pirated copy of 'ARM' was recorded at SRK Mirage Theatre in Coimbatore, linked to the notorious piracy group 'Tamil Rockers'. Police revealed that the group earned Rs 1 lakh for each movie they uploaded to certain websites, and the duo had pirated 32 films before being apprehended.
During their arrest, the accused were also found with a pirated version of 'Vettaiyan', which had only been released a day earlier. Their method involved purchasing high-priced tickets and selecting seats that allowed them to record the films without detection, with the help of accomplices who booked nearby seats to avoid suspicion. These recordings were then distributed through various online platforms, including Telegram.
The piracy of 'Ajayante Randam Moshanam' came to light when a clip surfaced on social media, showing someone watching the film on a mobile phone during a train journey. This prompted director Jithin Lal and producer Listin Stephen to file a complaint with the Kochi Cyber Police, leading to the arrest of the two individuals. Similar cases had surfaced before, with the Cyber Police having previously apprehended someone for uploading a pirated version of 'Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil'.
