Rama Bramha Hanuma Creations has asserted that it holds the registered rights to the title Vaaranasi

SS Rajamouli’s highly anticipated film Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran, has run into controversy even before production has begun. The project is facing a potential legal challenge over its title, as well as criticism surrounding recent remarks made by the director.
Production House Claims Ownership of Title
Rama Bramha Hanuma Creations has asserted that it holds the registered rights to the title Vaaranasi, claiming it was officially secured with the Telugu Film Producers’ Council in 2023. According to documentation, the registration has been renewed and remains valid from 24 June 2025 to 23 July 2026.
Despite this, Rajamouli’s team unveiled the film as Varanasi—a spelling variation of the same name—during a grand launch event at Ramoji Film City on 15 November. The production house has not yet filed a formal complaint, leaving it unclear whether negotiations will take place or whether the dispute will escalate to official arbitration. If a complaint is lodged, the film council will review the claims and determine rightful ownership of the title.
Controversy Over Rajamouli’s Remarks
The film has already drawn attention for another reason. Rajamouli recently faced criticism from Hindu organisations for comments he made about his personal beliefs during the film’s teaser launch.
Speaking at the event, he said:
“This is an emotional moment for me. I don’t believe in God. My dad came and said Lord Hanuman is behind me and is guiding me… thinking of this, I’m angry. My wife is also fond of Lord Hanuman… she behaves as if he were her friend and converses with him. I got angry at her as well.”
Groups including Vanarasena and Gow Rakshak Sangh accused the director of hurting religious sentiments and submitted a written complaint to the Saroor Nagar Police, alleging that his remarks were “intentionally insulting” and could provoke religious disharmony.
Awaiting Clarity
A similar account of the title dispute was later reiterated by industry sources, noting that while the title Vaaranasi is indeed registered to Rama Bramha Hanuma Creations, no official complaint has yet been filed. The uncertainty leaves Rajamouli’s team waiting to see whether negotiations or legal proceedings will follow.
When is the film coming out?
Varanasi is slated for a multilingual release in summer 2027.
