New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Bollywood legend Dharmendra, describing the veteran actor as an iconic figure in Indian cinema.

In a heartfelt message on X, PM Modi wrote, "The passing of Dharmendra Ji marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people. Dharmendra Ji was equally admired for his simplicity, humility and warmth. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans. Om Shanti."

Dharmendra, who passed away on Monday at the age of 89, was known as the “He-Man” of Bollywood and had a career spanning over six decades, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and a lasting impact on Indian cinema.

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her grief over the passing of Dharmendra, describing it as a “great loss to Indian cinema.”

In a post on X, she said, “The demise of veteran actor and former Member of Parliament Shri Dharmendra Ji is a great loss to Indian cinema. One of the most popular actors, he delivered numerous memorable performances during his decades-long illustrious career. As a towering figure of Indian cinema, he leaves behind a legacy which will continue to inspire young generations of artists. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers.”

The actor, who would have turned 90 on December 8, was not keeping well for a while and was in and out of a Mumbai hospital, with the family finally deciding to continue his treatment at home earlier this month.

A police statement said Dharmendra died this morning, and funeral arrangements are being made at the Pawan Hans crematorium in the Ville Parle suburb of Mumbai.

An ambulance and several cars left Dharmendra's Juhu residence, and Hema Malini, Esha Deol, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan were seen at the crematorium.
