A social media post intended as a call for peace has snowballed into one of the most discussed online controversies in Malayalam entertainment circles this week. Television host and influencer Pearle Maaney's comments on the student protests that took place at Delhi's Jantar Mantar triggered widespread criticism, but it was her subsequent exchange with Joe Malayil, son of National Award-winning filmmaker Sibi Malayil, that transformed the debate into a personal public confrontation. 

As screenshots spread across social media, the conversation shifted from the protests themselves to questions of free speech, personal attacks and political signalling. Yet, amid the outrage, another question has quietly emerged: did a key part of Pearle's response get widely misinterpreted online?

The controversy now appears to be less about a single Instagram post and more about how social media users interpreted, and in some cases inferred, the meaning behind subsequent statements. While neither Pearle nor Joe has publicly clarified the specific point at the centre of this debate, the sequence of events has left room for differing interpretations.

How the controversy began

The episode started after Pearle Maaney shared her views on the CJP-led student protests that took place near Jantar Mantar in Delhi. In her post, she called for peace, safety and non-violence.

As a response to this Joe Sibi Malayil wrote a 7-page Instagram post calling her advice to the protesting students "peak stupidity" and questioning the substance of her statement.

Pearle's response to critics

Rather than ending the discussion, Pearle addressed the criticism through an Instagram Story.

She suggested that her message had unsettled several people and defended her right to express her opinion.

She wrote:

"My post should have come with a trigger warning I guess! It has made a lot of people uncomfortable.

It has triggered so many people that I want peace safety and non violence.

I wonder who these people are!

A failed film maker now writing a 10 page script about my 4 page post. Adding chilli powder and ajinomoto to make it as unhealthy as possible.

My favourite.

Some are asking sarcastically if my 2 kids are safe now. Reminding me that they are Girls... well I know they are girls.. so? Oh! Blackmailing me to change my statement?

U have to first touch their momma bear for that. You are Messing with the wrong person.

U don't have to give me freedom of speech. I already have it and I will use it!

Her mention of saffron generated another wave of online discussion, with many users interpreting it as a political statement, while others viewed it simply as a personal expression tied to the Indian flag.

Joe Malayil's reply

After Pearle referred to "a failed film maker" writing a "10 page script", Joe concluded that the remark was aimed at his father.

He responded:

"Hey momma bear, that "failed film maker" is my father. Check properly before who you are dealing with. How lazy must you be to read 7 slides? You expect 5.7 million followers to read your half cooked diplomacy and 7 slides is too much for you? Since you made it personal. Let the games begin. "That failed film maker" didn't raise a son without a spine, unlike your father who raised a coward.

PS his name is Sibi Malayil. Go ahead. Do your best."

The exchange quickly spread across Instagram and other social media platforms, drawing thousands of reactions and prompting users to choose sides.

Was Pearle referring to Sibi Malayil?

This is where the discussion becomes more nuanced.

Much of the online reaction proceeded on the assumption that Pearle's description of "a failed film maker" was directed at National Award-winning director Sibi Malayil.

However, Pearle never explicitly named either Sibi Malayil or Joe Malayil in her Instagram Stories.

At the same time, Joe's publicly accessible LinkedIn profile reportedly identifies him as working in the film industry as an assistant director. That has prompted some social media users to question whether Pearle's remark may have been directed at Joe himself rather than his father.

Others argue that, irrespective of whom the remark targeted, describing anyone as a "failed filmmaker" was unnecessarily personal.

Neither interpretation has been confirmed publicly.
