Netflix suffered a significant outage in the United States on Wednesday evening, temporarily disrupting streaming for thousands of users and triggering related glitches in India.

The disruption coincided with the launch of Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1, amplifying user frustration. Within minutes of the premiere, social media was flooded with complaints from viewers experiencing frozen screens or app crashes.

Downdetector, which tracks user-reported issues, logged over 9,000 problem reports in the US at the time. Most users reported streaming failures, while a significant portion highlighted server-connection errors.

A user tweeted: “Netflix briefly crashed for about 3 minutes as #StrangerThings Season 5 premiered today, overwhelmed by hordes of fans diving back into the Upside Down! Service restored quickly, but the hype is real. Ready for the final ride?”

Another added: “Netflix still hasn’t learned how to handle big events… I was only able to watch ONE episode of Stranger Things and now it’s down.”

The highly anticipated Stranger Things Season 5 is being released in multiple stages globally. In India, the first four episodes of Volume 1 were made available from 6:30 am IST on Thursday, November 27, 2025, as part of a staggered rollout designed to maximise engagement and maintain suspense throughout the final season.

Volume 2, containing episodes 5 to 7, is scheduled for release in India on December 26, 2025, followed by the final episode on January 1, 2026, marking the conclusion of the series.

The phased release also aligns with the eve of Thanksgiving in the US, allowing fans across regions to experience the highly awaited return of the series together.
