Kochi: It was with a smile that director Sibi Malayil posted his first letter from the Mutharamkunnu Post Office to Malayalam cinema. What followed was not just smiles, but a rich blend of sorrow, joy, love and suspense — a stream of classics that left an enduring mark on the silver screen. One of Malayalam cinema’s most beloved directors, Sibi Malayil is now completing 40 years in the industry. His debut film, Mutharamkunnu P O, was released on June 21, 1985.

To celebrate the milestone, a grand felicitation event will be held in Kochi on June 21, with several Malayalam film industry figures coming together to honour him.

“Forty years — it’s a major milestone in human life. I consider it a blessing and a source of pride that I could remain active in Malayalam cinema for so long,” Sibi Malayil says. “I made Thaniavarthanam and Kireedam, and also musical gems like His Highness Abdullah, Bharatham and Kamaladalam. Even after making a crime thriller like August 1, I was fortunate to direct deeply emotional films like Akashadoothu and Mayamayooram. It’s been a fortunate journey.”

The felicitation is being organised by his protégés — directors Sundardas, Jose Thomas and Thomas Sebastian. The event will also be attended by actors Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Dileep. Mutharamkunnu P O screenwriter Jagadish, scriptwriter Sreenivasan and lead actor Mukesh are also expected to participate in honouring the filmmaker who launched their unforgettable journey together.
