Malayalam cinema has long thrived on actor–director partnerships that bring together distinctive performances and filmmaking sensibilities. From crime thrillers and family dramas to action entertainers, some combinations have returned to the screen repeatedly, creating films that continue to be discussed by audiences.

The latest pairing to attract attention is Joju George and Shaji Kailas, whose action thriller ‘Varavu’ has now moved to the OTT space. The film, which was released theatrically in July, began streaming on ZEE5 on September 11.

Here are four actor–director collaborations that have stood out in Malayalam cinema.

Joju George – Shaji Kailas (Varavu)

Varavu brings together actor Joju George and filmmaker Shaji Kailas for an action thriller set against Kerala's high-range landscape. Joju plays Kaattungal Paulson, a man whose return home brings buried conflicts, crimes and rivalries back to the surface.

The film, written by AK Sajan, also features Arjun Ashokan, Murali Gopy, Saniya Iyappan and Vani Viswanath. After its theatrical release on July 16, the film became available on ZEE5 from September 11.

With Joju taking on a mass-oriented role and Kailas returning to the action genre, ‘Varavu’ adds a new combination to the director's filmography.

Mohanlal – Jeethu Joseph (The ‘Drishyam’ franchise)

Few Malayalam actor–director partnerships are as closely associated with a particular genre as Mohanlal and Jeethu Joseph. Their biggest collaboration remains the ‘Drishyam’ franchise, which centres on Georgekutty and his family and combines domestic drama with crime and suspense.

The original ‘Drishyam’ was followed by ‘Drishyam 2’ in 2021, again bringing Mohanlal and Jeethu Joseph together. The sequel continued Georgekutty's story while building on the events of the first film.

The success of the franchise also helped establish the pairing as one of the prominent actor–director combinations associated with Malayalam thrillers.

Fahadh Faasil – Dileesh Pothan

Fahadh Faasil and Dileesh Pothan have developed a distinctive partnership through films that place ordinary people and their everyday complications at the centre of the story.

Their collaboration includes ‘Maheshinte Prathikaaram’ and ‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum’. The latter, released in 2017, starred Fahadh alongside Suraj Venjaramoodu and Nimisha Sajayan and was directed by Pothan. The crime drama was written by Sajeev Pazhoor, with Pothan at the helm.

The collaboration has been notable for its focus on realistic characters and situations, while allowing Fahadh's performances to operate within Pothan's understated filmmaking approach.

Mammootty – Amal Neerad

Mammootty and Amal Neerad's partnership has produced some of the more visually distinctive action films in Malayalam cinema.

The pair first worked together on ‘Big B’, Neerad's directorial debut, in 2007. Mammootty played Bilal John Kurishinkal in the action thriller, which went on to develop a strong following over the years.

The duo reunited 15 years later for ‘Bheeshma Parvam’, with Mammootty playing Michael, the head of a powerful family in 1980s Kochi. Neerad has spoken about how his long association with Mammootty evolved between the two films.

The two films demonstrate the appeal of the collaboration: Mammootty's commanding screen presence combined with Neerad's emphasis on striking visuals, stylised action and atmosphere.

A successful collaboration can become more than a recurring combination of names. When an actor and filmmaker understand each other's creative language, subsequent projects can build on that familiarity while exploring different characters and genres.
