Kochi: An organisation of Malayalam cinema producers has pointed out that the concept of equal pay for men and women doing creative work, including acting, in cinema is “impractical”.

The Kerala Film Producers’ Association (KFPA) has given a letter to the Chief Minister citing the same.

“Remuneration is determined by market value and creativity. It is the producer’s discretion. There are women directors, screenwriters and actors who are paid more than men,” states the letter written by the Association to express its view on the Hema committee report.

“If there is a mandate that a film can be made only if there is a certain percentage of women, it will not be possible for even women directors or producers to make a film,” it adds.

KFPA also said in the letter that gender equality in the content of the film, which is formed through the creative process, is also not practical.

The letter gains significance as the issue of equal pay irrespective of gender in cinema has become one of the hot topics of discussion following the release of the Hema Committee Report that looked into various injustices meted out to women in the Malayalam film industry.
