Kochi: The theatre revenue share for the release of big-budget Malayalam films may undergo further revision, it has been indicated. The recent resolution of the dispute surrounding the release of Patriot, starring Mammootty and Mohanlal, is seen as a sign of this potential shift.

As per the new understanding, the producer’s share for Patriot is set at 60 per cent in the first week, 55 per cent in the second week, and 50 per cent from the third week onwards.

This is being viewed as a significant change, particularly as Patriot will continue to receive a 50 per cent share from the third week onwards for as long as it remains in theatres. Previously, the share typically fell to 40 per cent or even 30 per cent after the third week.

Observers suggest that if this “Patriot model” is adopted more widely, it could benefit other big-budget productions. Several major films are in the pipeline, including Jeethu Joseph’s Drishyam 3, starring Mohanlal, Jayasurya’s Kathanar, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kalian, the second instalment of the Loki franchise (Loki Chapter 2) with a large star cast, and Dulquer Salmaan’s I Am Game.

Producers had initially demanded a 60 per cent share for Patriot during the first two weeks. However, the Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK) reportedly opposed the request, leading to a temporary ban on the film’s release. The matter was later resolved through discussions between the concerned parties.
