Living in a time when doing a film invites ED raids: Vedan urges youth to stay politically conscious

Kochi: Popular rapper Vedan has stirred debate on social media following his remarks related to the film Empuraan during a recent stage performance. His comments have drawn attention for their sharp criticism of the establishment and his outspoken stance on the current sociopolitical climate.

Referring to Empuraan and the ongoing controversies surrounding it, Vedan said, “It’s an era where even making a film could invite an Enforcement Directorate raid. Hope you are aware of what people around you are talking about. Stay calm and be conscious of your social realities. You are college-going youth—grow into politically aware individuals. You are the only hope. The so-called elders are busy displaying foolishness. Don’t you read the news every day? Things are becoming increasingly boring and frustrating. There’s hope only in you,” he said.

Vedan's statements come at a time when Empuraan has been the centre of significant political and legal attention. The film faced backlash from right-wing factions following certain references related to the 2002 Gujarat riots. In response, some scenes were edited and removed from the film.

Amidst the controversy, the Income Tax Department issued notices to actor-director Prithviraj and producer Antony Perumbavoor. Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate conducted raids at the residences and offices of Gokulam Gopalan, another production partner of the film.
