Lijo Jose Pellissery, a director known for his unique approach to Malayalam cinema, has consistently challenged conventional filmmaking. His films, celebrated internationally, have earned acclaim at various film festivals. With his distinct style, Pellissery has created a brand around his name, making waves in the industry despite the relatively few films he has directed. His works are known for breaking away from traditional formats, pushing the boundaries of what Malayalam cinema can offer.

Speaking at the Galatta Plus Mega Pan India Directors' Round Table 2024, Lijo Jose Pellissery shared his experience of screening his commercially successful and critically acclaimed film Angamaly Diaries at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. Reflecting on the experience with excitement, Pellissery took a trip down memory lane during his conversation with an esteemed panel of directors from across the country. The session was moderated by Baradwaj Rangan.

"Feelings are universal, and so are cinematic ideas and elements that resonate across the world. For example, when we screened Angamaly Diaries at Busan, the audience loved the film. The reference to 'pork' and its significance in the story struck an immediate chord with the Koreans, as pork is a much-loved meat in that part of the world. This is how cinema connects with people," explained Pellissery.

Angamaly Diaries, released in 2017, featured an ensemble cast led by Antony Varghese (Pepe), Appani Sarath, and Anna Rajan. The film was a runaway hit, particularly beloved by younger audiences.

In the discussion, which featured prominent filmmakers such as Reema Kagti, Srijit Mukherji, and Rajkumar Periasamy, Lijo shared his insights on filmmaking and audience expectations.

Failure of ‘Vaaliban’ 

Reflecting on his recent film Malaikottai Vaaliban, starring Mohanlal, Pellissery admitted that the film did not receive the expected response from audiences. However, he noted that he only felt disappointed for about three weeks before moving on.

"I don't believe in making films based on what the audience likes. Instead, I think we should make films that alter their tastes," Pellissery remarked. He expressed his belief that it is the filmmaker's responsibility to shift the audience's preferences and guide them towards new cinematic experiences, rather than merely catering to their existing tastes.

Regarding the film’s reception, Pellissery said, "The response to  Malaikottai Vaaliban wasn't what I had hoped for, but I was upset about it for only about three weeks. I don't think we should make films just to please the audience. Instead, we should constantly strive for change."

He further added, "Whether we make films that audiences like or whether we make films that challenge their tastes is still a question for me. I believe it works in both ways, I always try to be honest in my approach. I believe it is part of the craft of filmmaking to lead audience towards different kinds of cinema."
