Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) may not back the movie 'Churuli' in Kerala High Court. The Censor Board had made it clear earlier that the copy of the movie that is being streamed on OTT was not approved by the board.
If the court takes a strong decision over the use of foul language in OTT releases, then the government will have to consider the implementation of strict censoring and guidelines for such releases. The government sources said that the Department of Cultural Affairs has not talked about implementing guidelines for OTT releases in the ongoing discussions for new movie guidelines.
The court has also served notice to the Censor Board in the case against 'Churuli'. CBFC regional officer V Parvathy had released a press release stating that the movie was given an 'A' certificate when the controversies over the use of language in the movie broke out and that the print being streamed on OTT is not the one certified by the board.
OTT releases do not require the Censor Board’s certificate as of now. 'Churuli' landed in trouble for the extensive use of foul language throughout the movie.
N Maya, the Managing Director of Kerala State Film Development Corporation, said that many producers had approached them during the time of Covid lockdown requesting censoring theatre before releasing the movie on OTT and that several theatres were allowed for this purpose.
