Cheruthoni (Idukki): The movie 'Churuli' is the most discussed topic on social media currently. In reality, ‘Churuli’ is a village in Idukki district. After the release of the movie, the people living in this place are being subjected to insults and stalking.
Social media groups try to establish that the villagers of Churuli speak the same abusive language as used in the movie. They have been receiving teasing phone calls regularly and the people are fed up with explaining that the real ‘Churuli’ is not what has been shown in the movie ‘Churuli’.
The locals of Churuli are requesting the public that just because the movie was shot in Idukki district does not mean that they have tried to portray the place in it. They are planning to file a complaint regarding this to the Cultural Affairs minister Saji Cheriyan.
History swirls in Churuli
The real ‘Churuli’ made headlines in the 1960s after the people went through severe ordeals. They were tortured by the police during the struggle for existence in that period. The government tried to evacuate the farmers who migrated from other places. The settlers underwent brutal attacks from the police in Churuli and Keerithodu.
Hence, AKG, Father Vadakkan and Mathai Manjooran announced a strike against the authorities. AKG staged an indefinite hunger strike. Finally, the fascist government had to kneel before the fighters and repeal the policies regarding the eviction of the farmers from their land. Some of the survivors of that struggle are still alive in Churuli.
