Lee Dong Wook, known for his intense performances in Goblin, Tale of the Nine-Tailed, and A Shop for Killers, is making a surprising comeback to romantic comedies with The Divorce Insurance on Prime Video.

At 43, the veteran actor, who has built a career on versatility and daring choices, says he now prioritizes personal passion over popularity when selecting roles.

In an interview with Hindustan Times' Puja Talwar, Lee Dong Wook shared insights into career and his upcoming work.

Why The Divorce Insurance is a fresh challenge

In The Divorce Insurance, Lee plays Noh Ki-jun, an insurance actuary who, after three failed marriages, creates a unique divorce insurance scheme. Despite never being married in real life, Lee insists that his personal experience wasn’t a factor in shaping the character.

"I don't think being married and divorced three times in real life would have helped me understand Noh Ki-jun any better. I just focused on the script because all the answers were there. I can’t reveal too much, but if you watch the show, you’ll relate to Noh Ki-jun and his unique characteristics. It all came naturally to me after reading the script."

Embracing riskier roles: A career evolution

With over 25 years in the industry, Lee Dong Wook continues to push himself beyond expectations. His breakthrough role in My Girl (2005) launched him into Hallyu stardom, but instead of playing it safe, he has taken on a diverse mix of thrillers, fantasy dramas, and psychological roles.

"With each passing year, I try to care less about my popularity or what people might think of my projects. Instead, I follow my heart and choose roles that draw me in—things that feel new and exciting. That’s why I think I’m becoming braver with my choices."

The Divorce Insurance: What to expect

The Prime Video original, set to premiere on March 31, promises a blend of comedy, emotional depth, and unconventional storytelling. With Lee Dong Wook at the helm, fans can expect a rom-com with a unique twist, proving once again that he is an actor unafraid of reinventing himself.
