Kamal Haasan`s Thug Life receives divided reviews. Critics praise visuals & STR`s performance, but criticise the weak plot. Did the controversy impact box office?

Kamal Haasan’s much-anticipated film Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam and featuring STR (Silambarasan), hit the screens amid high expectations, but the reactions on X reveal a divided audience. While some hailed the film as a technical marvel with standout performances, others called it a major letdown, particularly criticising its second half and lack of emotional depth.
Social media buzz: STR steals scenes, but story falters
X has become a battleground of opinions for Thug Life. While a segment of users lauded the film’s visuals, background score, and performances, especially by STR, many expressed disappointment over the film’s narrative execution.
“STR steals every scene, lives the role, but not much writing to his character. Expected more writing to his characters,” one user wrote, echoing the sentiment that the actor’s potential was underutilised. Another praised the climax, saying, “Kamal Haasan is classy, but it is STR who truly electrifies the screen, especially in the climax.”
Yet, the positivity was sharply contrasted by frustrated viewers:
“An Average First Half With a Good for nothing Second Half. Totally Execution of Old Wine in The Old Pot.”
“KH-Trisha love portions r Dull. STR, Abirami Neat. Songs gud. Delhi landscape visuals super. Weak Story, No emotions, No twists; Unexciting & Draggy," said a user.
Some users pointed out inconsistent pacing and shallow characters, with one noting, “Had the movie maintained the tone of its opening act it would've faired much better, The screenplay was rushed with Weird pacing, odd writing and shallow characters which don't let the movie settle with you which is a rare and rather sad thing to say for a Mani Ratnam film.”
Even loyal fans weren’t spared from the disillusionment. One post humorously reflected the change in opinion before and after the film's release from a STR fan's perspective, stating that the excitement had no connection to what played out on screen.
However, not all responses were critical. A section of X users especially from the Telugu-speaking audience, gave Thug Life “blockbuster” tags, praising the “technically brilliant” visuals, rousing ARR score, and the power-packed performances, especially during the climax.
Controversy before the release:
The release of Thug Life was preceded by a controversy that further polarised opinions. Kamal Haasan’s comments during the promotion of the film, where he stated, “Kannada is born out of Tamil”, sparked outrage in certain quarters. Critics accused him of alienating non-Tamil audiences, particularly Telugu viewers a demographic the film was targeting for its pan-Indian appeal.
The backlash intensified on social media, and legal trouble followed. A ban was implemented against Haasan’s film, prompting the actor to approach the High Court. While the court stopped short of punitive action, it directed Haasan to issue an apology or clarification.
Did the controversy translate to box office gold?
Despite all the social media attention, both for the film and the controversy, the key question remains: Did it help the movie? While Thug Life sparked curiosity and drew crowds during its opening weekend, the long-term impact of both the polarising content and pre-release controversy remains to be seen.
The mixed reactions from X suggest that while the film delivered on some fronts, visuals, music, and performances, it may have fallen short of the epic expectations tied to a Mani Ratnam-Kamal Haasan reunion. Whether that’s due to the controversy, creative missteps, or just audience fatigue with familiar revenge dramas is still up for debate.
