Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has reportedly become the victim of a major financial fraud case after cyber criminals allegedly used his credit card information to carry out hundreds of unauthorised online transactions over nearly two years.

According to reports, the suspected fraud resulted in losses of more than $720,000 (Rs 6,82,72,056). Authorities in Hungary have arrested a 27-year-old Jordanian man in connection with the case, while investigators continue to examine how the actor’s financial information was compromised.

Suspicious transactions continued for nearly two years

Investigators said the alleged fraudulent activity took place between January 2024 and December 2025.

The case reportedly surfaced after an American financial institution detected unusual withdrawals from the account of a high-profile client. A complaint was subsequently filed through the Hungarian branch of the FBI, prompting local authorities to launch an investigation.

After reviewing transaction histories and banking records, investigators traced the suspicious activity to Hungary.

Officials said the accused allegedly attempted to conduct fraud through online platforms in hundreds of cases.

“During the investigation, investigators also discovered that the perpetrator attempted to commit fraud on online platforms in a total of 308 cases worth $721,415,” authorities said.

Accommodation bookings among major transactions

Investigators stated that a large number of the transactions were linked to purchases made through an international accommodation booking platform.

They also said additional online services were allegedly paid for using the same financial information connected to the fraud.

Reports claimed that the suspect had access to details linked to Depp’s American Express card before January 2024, though investigators are still working to determine exactly when and how the information was obtained.

Digital evidence led police to Budapest apartment

Police said investigators followed a detailed digital trail while attempting to identify the suspect.

The probe reportedly involved analysing online booking information, IP addresses, email accounts and mobile phone numbers connected to the transactions.

Officials said the digital evidence eventually led investigators to internet service providers in Hungary and later to a rented apartment in Budapest.

Suspect arrested in Angyalföld district

The 27-year-old suspect was arrested on May 6 at an apartment located in Budapest’s Angyalföld district.

A court has since ordered the man’s detention as the investigation continues.

During a search of the apartment, officers seized several electronic devices that are believed to have been used in the alleged cyber fraud operation.

Police also claimed they found suspected drug residue at the property.

The man is currently being investigated on allegations related to fraud involving an information system as well as drug possession.

Authorities continue investigation

Officials said forensic experts are still examining the electronic devices recovered during the raid.

Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that additional people may have been involved in the alleged scheme, and further arrests could follow depending on the evidence collected.

Police said efforts are ongoing to determine precisely how the actor’s financial data was leaked and whether other victims may also be connected to the wider investigation.

Officials added that the inquiry remains active as investigators continue gathering evidence in the case.
