Kannur: Noted Malayalam director Jeo Baby said that it is difficult to make women-oriented movies as producers are not ready to invest in such films.

Jeo Baby, whose Mammootty-starred ‘Kaathal-The Core’ won the 54th State Film Award for the Best Film, was speaking at a seminar organised under the leadership of the Non-Religious Citizens Kannur unit called Humanism 24.

A male-centric system exists because most of the decisions come from men's heads. Women's freedom isn't something to be granted, but rather created by themselves, he opined. Just because someone uses the term partner instead of wife, one cannot assume that women are treated equally.

“Pooja and breaking coconuts are common in cinema sets. Even the Left government is not free from such superstitions. Power group is present not only in movies, but also in the family system. The Hema Committee report will bring about a change in the workplace,” he said.

He had earlier praised the Hema Committee report as a major turning point for the Malayalam film industry. He had stated that the rising allegations are not damaging, but improving the industry.

Sindhoori Vijayan was the moderator of the seminar in which Rajini Vellora, Arun Ezhutchan, Akhil Ponnarat, Jafar Chalikode, Dr Jayashree and Zoya Wayanad also spoke.
