After multiple postponements and months of uncertainty, Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ is now officially set to release in cinemas worldwide on July 23.

The announcement came from KVN Productions, which unveiled the date with the message: "Tested by fire. Forged by time. Built for history. The tougher the battle, the louder the victory. Jana Nayagan from July 23."

The confirmation ends months of rumours about when the actor's much-awaited political action drama would finally reach theatres.

A last-minute change to the release plan

Interestingly, the film will arrive a day earlier than what many in the trade had been expecting.

Industry sources say distributors had initially been informed about a July 24 release. However, the makers have now moved the date forward to July 23. Overseas exhibitors have already begun preparing for the release, with advance bookings opening in markets including Australia and several European countries.

‘Jana Nayagan’ was originally expected to be a major Pongal release and was scheduled to hit theatres on January 9. Instead, the film remained off the release calendar for months because its certification process ran into unexpected hurdles.

The makers submitted the film to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in December 2025. After watching the film, the examining committee recommended a U/A 16+ certificate and suggested a few edits.

The production team completed the required changes and resubmitted the film, expecting the process to move ahead. However, just before the planned release, the CBFC referred the film to its revising committee, putting the certification on hold.

As the delays continued, the certification issue became one of the most closely followed topics in Tamil cinema.

The makers even approached the court before later withdrawing their writ petition. After months of uncertainty, the film finally cleared the certification process with an A certificate, paving the way for its theatrical release.

The film carries added significance because it is widely expected to be Vijay's final appearance on the big screen before he turns his full attention to politics.

Ironically, the film was first planned to release ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Following the repeated delays, it will now reach audiences after Vijay has already assumed office as the state's Chief Minister.

Star-studded cast

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani.
