While he became famous for playing tough authority figures, those who knew him remember a warm and generous man

James Tolkan, widely recognised for playing the stern school principal Mr Strickland in the ‘Back to the Future’ series and Commander Tom “Stinger” Jardian in ‘Top Gun’, has died at the age of 94.
His management confirmed that he passed away in Saranac Lake.
Although Tolkan became famous for portraying strict and intimidating authority figures, those who worked with him remember a very different person.
A crew member from ‘Back to the Future’ described him as “one of the kindest men you would ever meet”. They recalled how he enjoyed meeting fans and often recreated his well-known nose-to-nose moments with Michael J Fox, jokingly calling them “slackers” in a light-hearted way.
“Any time I got a chance to see James was just delightful,” the crew member said.
“As harsh as Mr Strickland seemed, James Tolkan was the complete opposite. He was genuinely one of the kindest men you could meet,” as quoted by People.
Early life and journey into acting
Tolkan was originally from Michigan but spent parts of his childhood in Chicago and Tucson. He graduated from Amphitheater High School in 1949.
He later served in the United States Navy during the Korean War before relocating to New York City to pursue acting.
There, he trained under renowned teachers Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.
His management noted that after his parents separated, he moved through Chicago and eventually settled in Tucson, where he completed his schooling.
A career across stage and screen
Tolkan’s career spanned theatre, film and television. He was part of the original Broadway cast of Glengarry Glen Ross.
He also collaborated with acclaimed director Sidney Lumet on several films, including Serpico, Prince of the City and Family Business, according to People.
Iconic roles that defined his legacy
His portrayal of the no-nonsense Mr Strickland in the 1985 film ‘Back to the Future’ cemented his place in popular culture. He returned to the role in ‘Back to the Future’ Part II and also appeared as an ancestor of the character in the third instalment.
Tolkan also played the commanding officer to Tom Cruise in ‘Top Gun’. He continued acting in both film and television until 2011.
Life beyond the spotlight
Tolkan first visited the Lake Placid region in the 1970s. Years later, in 1996, he built a home there where he displayed his personal art collection.
Family and final wishes
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee, as well as three nieces based in Des Moines.
According to his management, Tolkan had a deep love for animals. His family has requested that those wishing to honour his memory consider donating to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society or to their local Humane Society chapters.
