Ever since ‘Kankhajura’ made its debut on SonyLIV on May 30, with its web of manipulation, mind games, and morally grey characters, viewers have been left wondering—will there be more? In an exclusive conversation, director Chandan Arora weighs in on the possibility of a sequel to the psychological thriller, which features compelling performances by Roshan Mathew and Mohit Raina.

As the series leaves audiences piecing together its layered narrative, Arora opens up about whether the story has truly ended, or if this twisted world has more secrets to reveal.

‘Kankhajura’ is an Indian adaptation of the Israeli series ‘Magpie’. While the original series does have a sequel, Chandan, talking about the possibility of a sequel, told Mathrubhumi English exclusively: “So the original has a season two. ‘Magpie’ does have a sequel. But all these things are decided economically, how the audience has responded, how much they want the sequel, and what numbers have come in. All the actors and technicians, all of us, would want to go back on this ride again. But ya, we will have to see.”

Chandan, who previously worked on many acclaimed projects as an editor and assistant director in the Hindi film industry, before starting out as a director with ‘Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hu,’ made his debut in the OTT space with ‘Kankhajura’.

Ask him about how he perceives the evolution of storytelling in the Indian digital space, given his shift from films to OTT, he says, “One change that OTT has brought in is that films would earlier go to one theater in a district or few television sets in a village, but it’s now going to five screens in a single home. There are, of course, advantages and disadvantages too. But obviously, there is a lot of churning happening in terms of how people are creating and how people are consuming the content.”

Meanwhile, ‘Kankhajura’ also features Sarah Jane Dias, Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju, Mahesh Shetty, Ninad Kamat, Heeba Shah, and Usha Nadkarni in key roles. Rajeev Ravi and Vinod Illampally have done the cinematography, while Vaishak Ravi has done the editing for the eight-part series.
