
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has assured the creation of a respectful and conducive environment for female artists entering the film industry. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 29th Kerala International Film Festival (IFFK) in Thiruvananthapuram.
"Despite many festivals across the globe with historic and grand traditions, the IFFK has surged ahead. It has become one of the most prominent festivals with strong political content. Beyond being just a film festival, it has evolved into a platform for young men and women to experience new trends. We take pride in the fact that all honourees at this festival today are women. The state will ensure a respectful and enabling atmosphere for artists entering the film industry," the Chief Minister stated.
Film Academy chairman Premkumar, delivering the welcome address, remarked that cinema reaches humanity, highlighting its power to focus the camera on human conflicts and unite the world. He also expressed strong protest over the denial of justice to the victims of the Wayanad disaster.
During the inaugural ceremony, the Chief Minister presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Hong Kong filmmaker Ann Hui. The event also honoured veteran actress Shabana Azmi, who was the chief guest. The function was presided over by Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian, with the participation of Ministers V Sivankutty and G R Anil, V K Prasanth MLA and other dignitaries.
The festival, which is on till December 20, will screen 177 films from 68 countries across 15 theatres. The international competition section features 14 films, while the Malayalam Cinema Today section includes 12 films and the Indian Cinema Now section has 7 films. The World Cinema section boasts 63 films. Festival favourites, comprising 13 globally acclaimed films, will be another highlight. Also, 7 films will be showcased in the Country Focus section as part of the Armenian Cinema Centenary celebrations.
With over 13,000 delegates and around 100 film professionals in attendance, the 29th edition of the IFFK promises to be a grand event.
