Prominent Malayalam filmmaker Lal Jose who made his directorial debut with Óru Maravathoor Kanavu’’, has shared insights about his relationship with actor Kunchacko Boban during the making of ‘Classmates’. In a recent social media interaction, Lal Jose revealed that there was a brief rift between them after Kunchacko decided to withdraw from the film at the last minute.
Lal Jose explained that this decision was unexpected and left him feeling slighted. "After ‘Classmates’, I had a small disagreement with Chackochan because he backed out of the film just before shooting began," he stated.
During a trip with producer Benny P. Nayarambalam and Sabu Cherian, where Kunchacko and his wife Priya were also present, the topic of their previous disagreement came up. Lal Jose noted that he often reminded Chackochan that if an actor’s specific feature becomes overly popular, it could turn into a liability.
At that time, Lal Jose was planning the film 'Elsamma Enna Aankutty', which features a character named Unni, often referred to as 'Palunni' by the locals. He described the character as someone engaged in local cattle herding traditions, which prompted Kunchacko to express immediate interest in the role. Until then, the actor had never played a character like that.
Lal Jose's reflections illustrate not only the ups and downs of film-making but also the camaraderie and complexities that come with collaboration in the Malayalam film industry.
