London: The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations are in, and HBO Max has surged ahead with a commanding 142 nominations, setting a new personal best and topping this year’s list of most-nominated platforms. Closely following is Netflix, which secured a formidable 120 nominations across 44 titles, cementing its place as another major force in television excellence.

According to Variety, HBO Max’s tally eclipses its previous record of 140 nominations set in 2020, marking the highest-ever count for the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer. The all-time record, however, still belongs to Netflix, which notched 160 nominations in that same year. Netflix’s current count represents a noticeable increase from the 107 nominations it received in 2024.

HBO Max’s standout nominees this year include hit drama series ‘The Penguin’, ‘The White Lotus’, and ‘The Last of Us’, alongside the acclaimed comedy ‘Hacks’.

Netflix’s storytelling range earns industry applause

Netflix, though second in total nods, remained dominant across formats and genres. The platform was recognised in 14 of the 20 programme categories, including three of the five Outstanding Limited Series slots and five of six Variety Series (Pre-Recorded) nominations.

Its flagship contenders include ‘Adolescence’ with 13 nominations, followed by ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ (11) and ‘Black Mirror’ (10), which entered the Limited Series category for the first time after being ineligible for TV Movie.

Animation, acting and milestones

In animation, Netflix broke new ground with ‘Love, Death + Robots’ landing its first nomination in the Outstanding Animated Program category after dominating the Short Form Animated Program for years. ‘Arcane’ also continued its award-winning streak, boosting Netflix’s growing reputation in animated storytelling.

Veteran performer Maya Rudolph made Emmy history as the most-nominated woman in the Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance category, earning her sixth consecutive nomination for ‘Big Mouth’.

Netflix’s nominations also spotlighted a mix of veteran and first-time acting nominees, including Kristen Bell, Adam Brody, Stephen Graham, and Cooper Koch in lead categories, and Javier Bardem, Erin Doherty, Chloë Sevigny, and others in supporting roles. Notably, 15-year-old Owen Cooper became the youngest-ever nominee in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited/Anthology Series or TV Movie category for ‘Adolescence’.

Wide-ranging content earns recognition

With projects like ‘The Diplomat’, ‘Sirens’, ‘Black Mirror’, ‘Beyoncé Bowl’, and ‘Your Friend, Nate Bargatze’, Netflix demonstrated both artistic range and cultural relevance, earning acclaim for its commitment to pushing boundaries in storytelling.

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 14, 2025, broadcasting live from Los Angeles' Peacock Theater on CBS and streaming via Paramount+.
