He graced over 350 films, from iconic roles in classics like "Sholay" to a vibrant second innings in 21st-century comedies

Bollywood bids a sorrowful farewell today to veteran actor and iconic comedian Govardhan Asrani, who passed away. The industry is mourning the loss of a legend whose impeccable comic timing and versatile roles brought joy to millions across decades.
While Asrani's career spanned over 350 films and is defined by classics like ‘Sholay’ (1975), a newer generation will forever associate him with the laugh riots delivered through his prolific collaboration with director Priyadarshan.
The new millennium ushered in a spectacular "second innings" for Asrani, largely driven by his frequent and unforgettable appearances in the Bollywood comedies directed by Priyadarshan. This partnership proved a masterstroke, reintroducing the veteran comedian to a contemporary audience and cementing his status as an indispensable component of the comedy ensemble. Priyadarshan, known for seamlessly adapting Malayalam hits into Hindi, built a cinematic universe of situational comedy, and Asrani became a recurring, fan-favourite fixture in this world.
The Asrani-Priyadarshan magic saw the veteran comedian redefine his presence in Bollywood, becoming a crucial part of the director's successful comedy ensembles. His memorable roles—often as a flustered uncle, an exasperated landlord, or a bumbling official—were a stark contrast to his iconic 70s roles, showcasing his phenomenal range. These characters, though primarily supporting, were essential to elevating the chaos and humour that defined the Priyadarshan style.
His standout roles include the frantic Bank Manager in ‘Hera Pheri’ (2000), the harried Mamu in ‘Garam Masala’ (2005), the eccentric villager Chokhey in ‘Malamaal Weekly’ (2006), the flustered Event Manager in ‘Bhagam Bhag’ (2006), the comically named Mamu Lee Chan in ‘De Dana Dan’ (2009), the earnest yet funny Murari in ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ (2007), and the beleaguered Karodimal in ‘Khatta Meetha’ (2010). All of these roles highlighted his flawless comic timing and cemented his successful revival in the 21st-century comedy genre.
