Mumbai: Veteran Bollywood actor and director Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, passed away on Monday.

He was 84. He had been admitted to the hospital for the past five days.

Asrani's manager, Babu Bhai Thiba told ANI, "Asrani passed away today at 3 PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu. He is survived by his wife, sister, and nephew."

Known for his versatile acting and comic timing, Asrani had a career spanning more than five decades in the Hindi film industry.

Asrani appeared in over 400 Hindi films, playing lead roles, character roles, comedic roles, and supporting roles.

He was particularly remembered for his iconic portrayal of the jailer in Sholay and for his frequent collaborations with superstar Rajesh Khanna, appearing in 25 films alongside him between 1972 and 1991.

Though Asrani began his career with serious and supporting roles, his true talent for comedy soon emerged. By the 1970s and 1980s, he had become a staple of Hindi cinema, often portraying the lovable fool, the flustered clerk, or the witty sidekick. His impeccable timing, expressive face, and natural charm made him a director’s favourite.

He delivered memorable performances in classics like Sholay and Chupke Chupke, cementing his place as a prominent figure in Indian cinema.

Asrani’s versatility extended beyond comedy. He worked across genres and languages, including Gujarati and Rajasthani films, and even ventured into direction with several Hindi and Gujarati movies. He formed memorable comic partnerships with stars like Mehmood, Rajesh Khanna, and later Govinda, bridging generations of Bollywood comedy.

Beyond humour, he also showcased his dramatic range in films such as Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Chala Murari Hero Banne, where he took on directing as well.

His last rites were performed at Santacruz Crematorium.
