The series will adapt the game's acclaimed story, following the duo's emotional journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos' wife.

Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television on Friday unveiled the first official look at the live-action "God of War" series, confirming that production is officially underway on the high-budget adaptation of the hit PlayStation franchise.
The first-look image features Ryan Hurst ("Sons of Anarchy") as the Spartan warrior-turned-god Kratos and Callum Vinson ("Chucky") as his son, Atreus. The production still captures the duo in a dense forest setting, mirroring the aesthetics of the 2018 Norse-themed video game reboot.
From Game to Screen
The series, which has already secured a two-season order from Prime Video, will follow the narrative of the 2018 game. The story centres on Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a perilous journey to the highest peak of the nine realms to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ deceased wife, Faye.
"Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human," according to the official series logline.
The casting of Hurst is a notable nod to the source material; the actor previously provided the voice and motion capture for Thor in the 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarök.
An Ensemble Cast
The production also confirmed a sprawling ensemble cast to fill out the Norse pantheon:
- Mandy Patinkin as Odin, the All-Father.
- Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, the God of Thunder.
- Ed Skrein as Baldur, the primary antagonist of the first season.
- Teresa Palmer as Sif and Max Parker as Heimdall.
- Alastair Duncan, who voiced Mimir in the games, will reprise his role in the live-action series.
- Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka join as the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri.
Creative Pedigree
The adaptation is being led by showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander), with the first two episodes directed by Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys). Original game director Cory Barlog serves as an executive producer, ensuring the series maintains the "emotional core" that revitalised the franchise.
While the first image has sparked intense debate among fans regarding the translation of Kratos’ physique and tattoos to live-action, industry analysts suggest the project is following the "Fallout" and "The Last of Us" blueprint of high-fidelity, character-driven video game adaptations.
A release date has not yet been announced.
