Kochi: Veteran actor Devan has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the candidacy of accused individuals in the upcoming elections of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Speaking at a press conference in Kochi, Devan addressed the criticism over the nomination of actor Baburaj, who is contesting for the post of General Secretary.

Devan pointed out that actor Siddique had stepped down from his leadership position in the organisation immediately after facing allegations.

“When allegations surfaced, both Edavela Babu and Vijay Babu resigned without delay. Baburaj, however, chose not to do so,” Devan stated.

He further explained that expelling a member from AMMA is a structured process, and the highest authority within the organisation is the annual general body meeting. “If any accused individuals are contesting the elections, it is within the rights of the members to vote them out. The general body’s decision is final,” he emphasised.

Referring to the election scheduled for 15 August, Devan said, “This contest is part of the democratic procedure. If a majority agrees, the general body has the power to expel any member. Let the members decide – we will know on the 15th who remains and who does not. If the accused are contesting for election, the general body has every right to reject them.”

He cited the earlier expulsion of actor Dileep as an example of AMMA's willingness to act decisively. “The strength of the organisation lies in the fact that even a powerful actor like Dileep was expelled, without hesitation or legal wrangling,” Devan noted.

Devan also clarified that personal friendships would not influence his stance. “I am with Baburaj and the others who are accused. That’s a separate matter. But when official issues arise, I will stand by AMMA’s rules and regulations,” he concluded.
