Theni (Tamil Nadu): The mortal remains of legendary Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja reached his native district of Theni on Thursday morning ahead of his final rites. The 85-year-old veteran director, affectionately revered as 'Iyakkunar Immayam' (the peak of directors) for revolutionising the portrayal of rural landscapes in commercial Tamil cinema, passed away in Chennai due to age-related illnesses on Wednesday.

The Tamil Nadu government announced that the filmmaker will be laid to rest with full state honours. The funeral will take place at his personal farmhouse, situated between Devadhanapatti and Vatlagundu.

Strict security and administrative logistics in place

Following official state protocols, Theni District Collector R Vaidyanathan directed immediate ground preparations at the burial site. Periyakulam Tahsildar Marudhapandi inspected the farmhouse earlier today to supervise administrative arrangements.

Given the massive influx of film industry veterans, prominent political leaders and local admirers, law enforcement has established an extensive security net. Speaking to reporters, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) V Sasi Mohan confirmed that nearly 1,000 police personnel, under the direct supervision of two Superintendent of Police (SP) rank officers, have been deployed across the venue to maintain public order.

To handle the crowds smoothly, authorities have mapped out clear entry barriers. The police have set up separate channels and dedicated viewing enclosures for family members, general mourners and visiting VIP dignitaries. The formal rituals are scheduled to commence at approximately 3.00 pm.

 

Cinema fraternity mourns the 'Iyakkunar Immayam'

The news of Bharathiraja's demise has triggered widespread mourning across the Indian film fraternity. Renowned actress, producer and politician Khushbu Sundar expressed her deep grief on her social media account, describing his passing as a "gloomy cloud" over Tamil cinema and noting that his absence would leave a generational void among movie lovers.

Bharathiraja altered the course of Tamil cinema with his directorial debut in 1977 with the classic ‘16 Vayathinile’. Over a prolific career spanning more than four decades, he helmed over 40 films, delivering timeless classics such as ‘Kizhake Pogum Rail’, ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’, ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’, ‘Kaadhal Oviyam’ and ‘Mudhal Mariyathai’. His final directorial venture was the segment ‘Paravai Kootil Vaazhum Maangal’ within the anthology series ‘Modern Love Chennai’.

In his later years, Bharathiraja also transitioned into a highly respected actor, delivering memorable on-screen performances in projects like ‘Aayutha Ezhuthu’, ‘Pandianadu’, ‘Thiruchitrambalam’, ‘Maharaja’ and the recent Mohanlal-starrer ‘Thudarum’. His unreleased project ‘Pulavar’ will mark his final posthumous screen appearance.
