The Delhi High Court on Friday indicated it will issue an order directing the immediate removal of online material infringing upon the personality rights and copyright of legendary Malayalam actor Mohanlal.

Presiding over the suit, Justice Jyoti Singh has sought a detailed note from all parties by 4:30 pm today, after which a formal order will be passed. The Court has already directed social media intermediaries and digital platforms to provide Basic Subscriber Information (BSI) for accounts responsible for uploading the infringing content within a two-week deadline. Furthermore, the Court granted Mohanlal permission to implead additional defendants as the scope of the infringement expands.

During the proceedings, Justice Singh took a stern view of e-commerce platforms hosting unauthorised merchandise featuring the actor’s likeness. Questioning a representative for one such platform, the judge remarked:

"Blatantly using someone's image, why? Tell me if you have taken down, I will record it."

Counsel for the platform confirmed that the specific unauthorised merchandise had been removed. The Court subsequently reviewed a list of infringing URLs, instructing both sides to clarify which links are being contested.

Mohanlal, a recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Bhushan, and multiple National Awards, joins a growing list of high-profile figures—including Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, and, most recently, Sonakshi Sinha—seeking judicial protection against the unauthorised use of their name, voice, and image in advertisements and AI-generated content.

The matter is scheduled for further hearing on July 4. (With inputs from Agencies)
