Sun TV has moved the Madras High Court after its recent film Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna Akkineni and Aamir Khan, was awarded an “A” certificate for allegedly excessive violence, live law reported on Wednesday.

Production house seeks review

The report stated that Sun Pictures, the movie’s producer, applied for certification under Rule 22 of the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 1983. The Examining Committee, after reviewing the film, emailed that an “A” certificate would be granted if certain cuts were implemented.

Revising Committee maintains certificate

According to the report, the network sought a review under Rule 25, but the Revising Committee upheld the “A” rating, citing the film’s portrayal of extensive violence. Sun TV argued that compared with movies like KGF and Beast, Coolie showed lesser violence yet received the same rating.

Legal arguments on urgency

The report added that Senior Advocate J Ravindran, representing the company, requested a lunch motion. Additional Solicitor General ARL Sundaresan countered, noting that lunch motions are reserved for urgent cases. He highlighted that the movie had already released on August 14 and that Sun Pictures had initially accepted the “A” certificate rather than making additional cuts for a “U/A” rating.

Court proceedings

The report mentioned that Sundaresan urged the court to treat the filing as an appeal, allowing the Board to file its response. The court issued notice and adjourned the case to Monday for further hearing.
