As ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ opened in cinemas on September 5, fans around the world took to X to share their thoughts on what has been billed as the final chapter of ‘The Conjuring’ Universe. Directed by Michael Chaves, the ninth instalment brings back Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Many moviegoers have praised the ninth instalment for its gripping atmosphere, emotional depth, and a “fitting farewell” to Ed and Lorraine Warren’s spooky journey. Some users are hailing it as a “perfect swan-song” and “a terrifying final chapter.” Others, however, are less impressed, calling it “predictable,” “lengthy” and even a “laugh riot.”

One user on X wrote, “The conjuring: last rites was such a beautiful send off for the series. thank you james wan, patrick wilson, vera farmiga and so many others for such a wonderful run. forever my favorite horror franchise.”

Another user wrote, “The Conjuring Last Rites is officially my favorite from The Conjuring movies. Idc what anyone else says about it.”

A third user wrote, “It was spooky good. Make sure you stay all the way through the ending credits.”

The supernatural thriller once again stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, returning as paranormal investigators and authors Ed and Lorraine Warren. Unlike earlier entries, this finale reportedly shifts its focus from pure paranormal horror to a more personal family story, offering a look into the Warrens’ history. For longtime fans, that emotional turn has been bittersweet.

Several viewers noted that the first half moved slowly before picking up pace in the second half, delivering some “gripping moments” and, for some, a “decent farewell” to the franchise. Others were disappointed, with one calling it the “worst” entry of the series.

Box office predictions

Despite the mixed reactions, the film is off to a strong start at the box office both in India and abroad. Pre-sales in India outpaced recent releases including ‘Baaghi 4’, ‘The Bengal Files’, and ‘Madharaasi’, setting the stage for a major opening weekend. Sacnilk projected an opening-day take of ₹15–20 crore in India, with some suggesting it could become the first Hollywood horror title to cross ₹100 crore in the country.

Globally, ‘Last Rites’ is exceeding initial studio expectations. Warner Bros. had cautiously estimated a $35 million domestic (US) debut, but industry trackers now expect $55 million-plus, along with an estimated $50 million from 66 overseas markets, putting the film on course for a $100 million+ worldwide opening.
