O'Hara, a Canadian treasure, passed away after a brief illness. Her legacy of unforgettable characters will endure.

New York: In a poignant tribute that has resonated across generations of film fans, actor Macaulay Culkin joined a global chorus of mourners on Friday following the death of his on-screen mother, comedy legend Catherine O’Hara. O’Hara, the Emmy-winning star of Home Alone, Beetlejuice, and Schitt’s Creek, passed away Friday, Jan 30, at her home in Los Angeles at the age of 71. Her representatives at Creative Artists Agency (CAA) confirmed her passing, stating she died “following a brief illness.”
‘Mama. I Thought We Had Time’
Culkin, who famously played Kevin McCallister alongside O’Hara’s Kate McCallister in the 1990 classic Home Alone, shared a heartbreaking message on Instagram. Accompanied by a collage featuring a still from the film and a photo from their emotional reunion at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in 2023, Culkin wrote, “Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.” The tribute underscores the deep bond the pair maintained decades after they first worked together. During Culkin's Star ceremony, O'Hara famously joked about being the "fake mom that left you home alone not once but twice," a moment that went viral as a testament to their enduring friendship.
A Sudden Loss for Hollywood
The news of O’Hara’s passing triggered an immediate wave of grief from across the industry. Michael Keaton, her Beetlejuice co-star, called her his "pretend wife, pretend nemesis, and real-life, true friend," adding that the loss "hurts." Meryl Streep, who worked with O'Hara in Heartburn, praised her "whipsmart compassion" for the "collection of eccentrics" she portrayed. Dan Levy, her Schitt’s Creek son, described her as "extended family" even before they shared the screen, stating it is hard to imagine a world without her. Pedro Pascal, who collaborated with her on the second season of The Last of Us, shared that there is "less light" in the world without her.
Medical Background and Final Days
While a specific cause of death has not been released, emergency services were reportedly called to O’Hara’s Brentwood residence Friday morning following reports of breathing difficulties. She was transported to a local hospital before being pronounced dead. O’Hara was known to have dextrocardia with situs inversus, a rare congenital condition where the heart and other major organs are positioned in a mirror-image arrangement. While usually not life-threatening, the condition was a point of interest she often discussed with her trademark wit.
Legacy of a Comic Giant
A native of Toronto and an alum of the legendary SCTV, O’Hara’s career spanned five decades. From the iconic "Kevin!" scream to the eccentric, vocabulary-stretching Moira Rose, she was hailed as a "national treasure" by Canadian leaders and fans alike. She is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke.
